WITH ONLY DAYS remaining before Chris’s arrival, I was really obsessed with driving to Piste to the most famous and largest Yucatan ruin, Chichen Itza, to meet up with Roberto’s brother, Javier. After discussing the journey with Rosa, she seemed eager to join me. With the new superhighway built from Cancun to Merida, Piste was not as long a journey as it once was. We decided to leave Tuesday, allowing plenty of time before I had to be back to welcome Chris on Saturday. I was looking forward to sharing Puerto and its magic with him. It was time to reconnect and find balance between this life and my life back in Iowa. Sometimes I felt comfortably detached, and that concerned me. I had been able to maintain a reasonable contact with Chris, as I agreed, and with his schedule being so busy leading up to his vacation, he seemed absorbed in his work and not so needy.
I awoke before dawn on Tuesday and loaded up Rosa’s red jeep for our journey. I was going to pick her up after I said good-bye to Estrella and Sol. I didn’t want them to think I was abandoning them. Although, I was sure they would know, somehow, exactly where I was. I hadn’t had another dolphin dream or really any dreams I could recall since I had been visiting them.
