Foreword 16

3. How to read this book

This book is divided in three parts. The most useful way to read this book is to start from the beginning and proceed in order to the end. The concepts presented develop during the advancement of the study or they are later dealt with in connection with other standpoints in different parts of the book. If you don’t find understanding immediately -- read on – at least some of your questions will be answered.

• The first part presents a mental framework for winning and learning.
• The second part presents the action-learning process, a continuum where the skill is shifted to higher level through stages of transition.
• The third part is an attempt to understand the difficult phenomena of how the energy is mobilized in an action-learning process. We hope that this part is an opener for further discussions and deeper understanding of the matter.

In every part there are conversations with a coach to give you an idea how we, Collin and I, have experienced the topic in our learning processes.

We use the DNA doublehelix as a metaphor for the action-learning process and the mental framework linked to it. The terms like “the major groove,” “the base-pair” and so forth are adopted from the DNA terminology. The images will help you to follow both the language of the metaphor and the actual action-learning process or “the doublehelix.”

As a Finn, I have taken great liberties with the English vocabulary. I have used some words in unusual connections to express the meanings I haven’t found words for. I have also created my own words like “learngrams."
