Chapter V Major Groove 103
CHAPTER 5.
The Major Groove
The Stage of Skill
The Major Groove is the stage of skill. The stage where you operate at the present is your current level of skill, and the next level of skill is where you are aiming at, with the help of your conscious action-learning process.
The stage of skill has two loops: the peak-performance loop and the quality improvement loop. The crossroad-point between the loops is called the break-even point.
Picture 3. The purpose of this book is to help those learners who want not only to reach peak-performances but also raise their skill to new levels. The picture illustrates the growing nature of the action-learning doublehelix. The two aspects of growth are: the horizontal growth within the major groove -- the stage of skill, and the abrupt vertical growth -- the shift, following the minor groove, the transition.
The purpose of the major groove is to create and cultivate the skill to a point where the skill is mature and fully utilized so that a shift of the skill to the next level becomes actual. There are two peaks in the major groove;
• the first peak-performance, which is a result of vertical growth and establishes the standard level for the skill
• the quality peak, which is the result of horizontal growth and where the first peak-performance is quality-wise improved
The major groove is like an escalation ladder where you ascend higher and higher until you reach the top and start to get prepared for a shift to another ladder that takes you even higher.
The break-even point
Sometime after reaching the peak, you will meet the break-even point. Break-even point means that you have developed your skill to a point where the income matches the expenditures you have invested in your skill. With income and expenditure we refer to such assets that you consider remarkable for you and your process.
